Global Security Challenge Competition 2008 Opened for Entrants Today!
April 15 2008 | 6 comment(s)
Global Security Challenge, the largest international security innovation competition, is open for entries, offering security start-ups worldwide the opportunity to showcase their inventions and compete for over $500,000 in cash-grants.
The GSC, which is in its third year, aims to identify, explore and foster innovation in the field of homeland security. It was established in 2006 by London Business School students to empower start ups in the homeland security technology space. The goal is to support the development of innovative technologies and ensure their success. There are prizes in a number of different categories and each submission will receive feedback on their submission.
The winners of the first two GSC competitions, Ingenia Technology and NoblePeak Vision talk effusively about their experience with the Global Security Challenge. Both companies report substantial new investments, growth and further development of their security technologies since winning the award. As Cliff King, founder of NoblePeak Vision says: "Customer interest in our night vision technology soared from the publicity we received after winning the 2007 GSC. As a direct result we are now developing new camera systems with major OEM's and systems integrators"
Commenting on the competition, Janeen Chupa, Co-President of the GSC
said: "The Global Security Challenge is proving to be a very successful
competition, with the number of entries increasing with each year and
the entrants gaining access to a deep network of government, venture
capital and corporate organisations as well as academics. The 2008
competition is already attracting significant interest from start-ups
worldwide."
Innovators can enter this year's competition by submitting ideas before June 15th 2008. The 2008 challenge will see regional semi-finals in Europe, Asia and North America and will culminate with the grand final conference in London on November 13.

I am curious to hear in what form does the $500K award come in? Do I have to give up any equity for this money (if I win the competition)??

Oliver:
You do NOT have to give up a part of your company, if you win our GSC competitions. The $500,000 startup-award comes in the form of a grant from TSWG, an interagency group of the US Government, which the winning entrepreneur can use for further development of his/her technology. Similarly, the $10,000 Crowded-Places Idea award is also a cash grant. Besides these grants, the finalists can win mentorship programmes with leading venture capitalists in the US, Asia and Europe.
