Yesterday, your faithful correspondents visited the kickoff meeting for the UK's new Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE) outreach effort. As reported before on our blog the CDE is a new creation stood up to not only increase the supply base of the Ministry of Defence but to make it easier for innovators to reach out to the MOD.
The kick-off seminar focused on how to increase the effectiveness of dismounted soldiers through technology innovations. The main points centered around the bulk and weight that soldiers have to carry, sometimes equating to them carrying their own body weight worth of kit. It was also stated that technological improvements are needed around reducing the power burden and increasing the linking capability of systems. Baroness Taylor, the UK Minister for Defence Equipment & Support, stressed the need to work with innovative SMEs to better equip UK soldiers in the field.
The Centre is located within the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus within striking distance of London and Oxford. The head of the Centre is Dr. Helen Almey an ardent supporter and keen judge in last year's GSC European Semi-Final. We think this Centre is a good idea and a step outside the normal thinking of the MOD.
