2012 Olympics Budget to Rise Above £10 billion Due to Security Requirements

As reported by the Telegraph, the UK National Audit Office (NAO) says security costs, the uncertainty over the financing of the Olympic Village and a lack of a coherent plan for the legacy of the Olympic venues threaten to send the budget beyond £10 billion.
"The March 2007 budget for the Olympics included a preliminary estimate of £600 million - plus £238 million contingency - for policing and security. But there is still no "fully costed" plan, the report says. "There is not a firm basis for taking forward the wider security arrangements for the Games, or for making sure that wider security requirements have been fully reflected in the planning and delivery of other activities within the London 2012 programme." Costs of security while constructing the venues, staging the event and transport still have to be worked out, the report points out, although the Home Office is due to produce the figures by the end of 2008.
Hugh Robertson, the Shadow Sports and Olympics Minister, said: "There is no proper security masterplan and the security costs run the risk of blowing the budget out of the water. When you think that London won the Olympics the day before the July 7 bombs, the Government should have properly priced security plan by now."
