Seaglider Research Starts its Commercial Launch with iRobot

Yesterday's announcement of licensing Seaglider technology to iRobot is an encouraging example of government funded research at a university that will now be commercialized through the help of a private company.

iRobot acquired the exclusive license from the University of Washington's technology transfer office to commercialize Seaglider technology that was previously funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), starting in 1995.

As the announcement says:
Seagliders help civilian, academic and military personnel make oceanographic measurements at a fraction of the cost of traditional research vessels or moored instruments. These long-range, high-endurance vehicles economize on energy consumption with a buoyancy-based propulsion system to support mission ranges of thousands of kilometers and deployments lasting up to several months.

Helen Greiner, co-founder and chairman of iRobot said: "We have a strong track record for transferring new technology from research initiatives into products that support military missions,"

This is an encouraging sign for researchers around the world to advance their security innovations from research into real products that can make a difference!
