Five high-tech companies – specializing in brain fingerprinting to mesh networks - were selected as Semi-Finalists for the American-leg of the Global Security Challenge (GSC) on September 15th at the University of Maryland, to battle it out for $500,000 in cash and mentorship from venture capitalists. The two winners of the American Semi-Final will compete against winners from the Asian and European legs at the final event hosted by London Business School on November 13 for a $500,000 grant.

America’s Top Five Security Start-Ups 2008 are:

Brain Fingerprinting Laboratories (Washington) – novel method of using brainwaves to detect concealed information stored in memory
Privaris (Virginia) - intelligent badge holder that utilizes the concept of personal, mobile biometric identity verification
SensorWare Systems (California) - intelligent sensor infrastructures for active, real-time situational awareness and resource management
TRX Systems (Maryland) - technological breakthrough for tracking first responders both outdoors and within complex structures.
VideoIQ (Massachusetts) - world’s first intelligent surveillance camera with video recording.

The directors of the GSC, Simon Schneider and Janeen Chupa, commented:

“This year, we saw a record number of submissions from innovators in the United States, originating from universities, research labs, corporate spin-offs and their own garages. The breadth of the innovations from all kinds of disciplines showed us the value of hosting this competition to empower people with ideas.”

The University of Maryland (UMD) joined the GSC earlier this year to host the American part of this international competition. The American Semi-Final will occur on the UMD campus on September 15th, where business plans will be presented to a panel of judges, consisting of leaders from TSWG of the US Government, Booz Allen Hamilton, and the National Science Foundation.

The Global Security Challenge was founded by MBA students at the London Business School and is the first global competition to feed the growing market for new security technologies. The GSC is sponsored by TSWG of the U.S. Government, Accenture, Smiths Detection, BAE Systems and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, among others.
