Five high-tech companies – specializing in areas as diverse as protecting tunnels from explosions and fighting cyber crime with smartcards  - were selected as Semi-Finalists for the Asian-leg of the Global Security Challenge (GSC) at the National University of Singapore on September 26th to battle it out for $500,000 in cash and mentorship from venture capitalists.

The top five Asian security start-ups 2008 are:

•    G. Tsulukidze Mining Institute of Georgia (Georgia) – wireless system for detecting explosions and activating protective devices in underground environments

•    Hiperware (Singapore) – real-time decision making software that leverages cluster computing power for analysing enterprise processes to actively identify errors and monitor process effectiveness

•    Lockstep Technologies (Australia) – novel smartcard and identity technology that allows for secure and anonymous Internet transactions

•    Precision Sensors Instrumentation (Armenia) – single layer flat-coil-oscillator absolute-position sensors enable enhanced prediction of earthquakes and detection of armed activity in zero visibility settings

•    Veritide Limited (New Zealand) – hand-held screening device capable of detecting anthrax and other bacterial spores within minutes

The NUS Entrepreneurship Centre of the National University of Singapore partnered again with the GSC to host the Asian part of this international competition on September26th  where business plans will be presented to a panel of judges, consisting of leaders from TSWG of the US Government, Cap Vista, Upstream Ventures and Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency.

The directors of the GSC, Simon Schneider and Janeen Chupa, commented:

“We are extremely pleased with the quality of submissions from innovators in Asia, originating from universities, research labs, corporate spin-offs and their own garages.  The breadth of the innovations from all kinds of disciplines showed us the value of hosting this competition in Singapore to empower people with bright ideas that make us all safer.”

The Global Security Challenge was founded by MBA students at the London Business School and is the first global competition to feed the growing market for new security technologies.  The GSC is sponsored by TSWG of the U.S. Government, Accenture, Smiths Detection, PegasusBridge Fund Management, BAE Systems, ONR Global and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, among others.
